Final Practice Flight

Had another practice flight this morning. Two tasks were called to get the pilots ready for the competition that begins tomorrow. The first was a task which involved flying to an intersection and dropping a bean bag (using only gravity) on an intersection, while the second was a 3-dimensional task. The 3 dimensional task was something new for me, but involved pilots flying through three imaginary rings with the greatest distance in each ring receiving the best score. They are scored using a GPS, and as a result involve very little effort from the ground crew.

The conditions around here have made flying interesting. Lots of the fields still have standing water in them from the rains last week making launch and landing point selection difficult. We ended up landing this morning on a highway that is currently under construction (many of the balloons that flew yesterday launched from there).

The rains have lead to a large number of bugs down here as well. So far, we have successfully avoided being the victims of fire ant hills that dot the landscape down here.

Went out and explored some of the town yesterday afternoon. Have quite a few meetings later to prepare for the competition, so will not be venturing out today to take in some of the local sites. Maybe tomorrow though....
